Quote For The Day:

"What moistens the lip and what brightens the eye? What calls back the past like the rich pumpkin pie?" - John Greenleaf Whittier

Food For Thought:

My Three Daughters

I am a girl dad. This picture is of my three daughters around 2009. My youngest is 17 now and will be 18 soon. Now, I have three grandchildren. Time sure does go by fast. My youngest is in college now and asking me about the courses I took in college.

It is fun to see pictures from the past and think about the years that have gone by. The memories are really nice to recall. Days go by, and it is easy to forget a day, but a picture can bring back memories of a specific day.

Many years ago I was thinking about memories and how they can easily be forgotten. I decided to keep a digital journal for myself. I decided to journal each day and I kept up with this for two years. Each day I would journal every detail as much as possible, especially the things that highlighted that day.

After some time I would go back and read a daily entry in the journal and it amazed me how I could recall that day. I discovered it was a great way to preserve memories even if I didn't have pictures for that day. I haven't kept a journal in a long time but I am considering starting that up again so I can look back on each day. Can you remember the exact day one year ago? A journal may be a great project for you to start if you want to preserve memories without pictures daily. I used Google Docs for that project.

My Thoughts On Pumpkin Pie:

I really enjoy pumpkin pie and pumpkin-flavored food. The pumpkin spice coffee and other drinks are nice. I like the yearly pumpkin spice craft beers. I like to get a few for the fall time of the year. They are great with food.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday because of the food and the spirit of gratitude surrounding the holiday. I can eat pumpkin pie any time of the year. I always enjoy whipped topping with my pumpkin pie and it is especially good with sprinkled cinnamon on the whipped topping.

Extra Information For You:

A Brief History of Pumpkin Pie

While pumpkin pie is often associated with Thanksgiving, its origins date back much further.

  • Native American Roots: The Native Americans of North America cultivated and consumed pumpkins for centuries. They likely enjoyed pumpkin in various forms, including stews and pies.

  • Colonial Adaptation: Early European settlers in New England adopted pumpkins from the Native Americans. They experimented with using pumpkin in pies, often incorporating spices and other ingredients.

  • 18th Century Popularity: By the 18th century, pumpkin pie had become a popular dessert in New England. It was often served during Thanksgiving celebrations and other festive occasions.

  • Canned Pumpkin Revolution: The introduction of canned pumpkin in the early 20th century made it easier for people to enjoy pumpkin pie year-round, further contributing to its popularity.

Today, pumpkin pie remains a beloved American dessert, enjoyed by millions during the fall and holiday seasons. Its rich history and comforting flavor have made it a timeless classic.

Do you know what this vintage cooking tool is? My grandmother had one of these in her kitchen and I watched her use it many times. This kitchen tool is a Strainer Sieve and is used to make jam and tomato sauce.

My grandmother did make tomato sauce and she also made a lot of jelly and jam. She would grow the tomatoes herself and hand-pick the fruits for her jelly from the farm. I have great memories of my grandmother in the kitchen setting out the canning jars ready for filling and storage. In the basement, she had an area where she would store her homemade canned food.

Do you own vintage kitchen tools? If you visit an antique store you will find many vintage kitchen tools and you might wonder what they were used for. I have seen many kitchen tools in antique stores and wondered how they were used. To me, it is very interesting.

Take a look at Country Living's article which features 25 vintage tools you don't see anymore. Maybe you have at least one of these tools in your kitchen.

  • Did you encounter any difficulties with the meringue topping? How did you achieve a stable and fluffy texture?
  • How did you prevent the crust from becoming soggy while baking the pie?

  • How did you balance the sweetness of the meringue with the tartness of the lemon curd?
  • Did you find the crust to be the perfect base for the pie? Would you consider other crust options?

My Thoughts On Lemon Meringue Pie:

I am always surprised when I hear someone say they don't like lemon desserts or pies. I even love lemon flavor cakes. I had an aunt that ate raw lemons all the time. I don't know how she could do that because I think lemons are too sour by themselves, but I really like lemon flavor in foods. I even like lemon-flavored candy. The sweet and sour taste is good to me.

Food For Thought:

I recently created an account on Threads, a Facebook company. It is similar to Twitter (X) and is growing in popularity among social media platforms. I follow food-related accounts and found this funny food meme.

This meme is adorable and made me smile. I enjoy blogging recipes and cooking. Cake and pie is my favorite. I try to stay in shape and sugar is a big weakness for me. It is hard to say no to a great cake. When the cheap store-bought birthday cake is brought into the breakroom at work I find myself saying "Happy Birthday!" as I stuff the cake in my face.

It is easy for me to indulge in sweets of any kind. It's my choice. I think this food meme is funny because it illustrates a child raising hands toward heaven in a proclamation of giving carbohydrates to the Lord. I think it is about taking personal responsibility and the human ability to use a crutch. It creates humor out of human weaknesses. I am not trying to sound "preachy" or get too deep. I understand the humor in it.

It is a funny meme because we all have enjoyed a good dessert. I say enjoy life to the fullest but I try to enjoy it in moderation and wisdom. Now I shall go enjoy a dessert since it is Sunday. The carbs belong to the Lord!

  • How did you decorate your crescents? Did you add any glazes or toppings?
  • What would you serve your crescents with? Coffee, tea, or a savory dish?

Overall Experience

  • Would you consider making crescents again? What would you do differently next time?
  • How did this crescent recipe compare to others you've tried?

Creative and Fun

More Information For You:

A Brief History of Crescents

While the crescent-shaped pastry we know today is often associated with French cuisine, its origins can be traced back further.

The Kipferl: Austrian Precursor

The earliest form of the crescent-shaped pastry is believed to be the Austrian kipferl. This crescent-shaped bread roll, made with yeasted wheat dough, has been enjoyed in Central Europe since at least the 13th century.

The French Connection

The croissant, as we know it, is a French adaptation of the kipferl. It is said that the croissant's distinctive flaky texture emerged in the early 19th century when Austrian bakers brought their recipes to Paris. The French perfected the use of puff pastry, giving birth to the croissant we savor today.

The Crescent Symbolism

Interestingly, the crescent shape itself holds symbolic significance in various cultures, often associated with the moon. This symbolism may have subconsciously influenced the popularity of crescent-shaped pastries.

In essence, while the modern croissant is a French culinary masterpiece, its roots extend to Austria and beyond, making it a delightful blend of cultures and culinary traditions.

My Thoughts On Almond Crescents:

Crescents are so enjoyable and there are many different types to enjoy. I am an almond lover and I even drink almond milk because of my intolerance to milk. I enjoy almonds sliced, baked, chopped, and ground. I enjoy Almond Joy and Mounds candy bars. I also enjoy whole-seasoned almonds. The spicy almonds are my favorite.

Learn How To Make Your Baking Pan Look Like New:

Do you have a baking pan that looks like this? If you do any amount of baking or cooking at all, you will likely say yes to that question. Oven pans look burnt over time because of their general use. Nothing to be ashamed of. What do you do when your pan looks like this?

I was scrolling through Facebook and found this meme by the group Gen X. There were many comments on the subject. Some people said they love their pan looking like this. Others said they should throw it out. Some people gave tips on how to clean the pan. I personally don't want to throw out any cooking pans unless they are falling apart.

I know if you own a griddle it is good to have it dark and seasoned so food does not stick while cooking. There is a process to cleaning the griddle and burning cooking oil on it to make have a black color.

You may not mind your baking pans looking like they are burnt. That's ok. No judgment here. If you are someone who wants their baking pans to look brand new all the time, there is something you can do. I did a little research and found a cleaning process that will make your baking pans look like new. You can use two household items to clean your pans.

To learn how to make your baking pan look new, visit Better Homes & Gardens and read their article called How To Clean Baking Sheets With Hydrogen Peroxide.

Some Questions For You:

More Information For You:

One of the quickest ways to make homemade donuts is to use canned biscuits. Just pop the can open and drop them in oil after you cut the donut hole. It is a great cooking project to do with kids. They enjoy the pop that canned biscuits make when you open them. It will make them jump and giggle. That gets me every time.

I like to refer to other food bloggers with great content. If you are looking for a great donut-making project to do with your kids you can visit KITCHEN FUN With My Three Sons and see her donut post.

My Thoughts On Perfect Donuts Recipe:

This Perfect Donuts Recipe is basically a copycat recipe for the Krispy Kreme donut. They keep the recipe locked up and only a few people in the upper ranks of the corporation know the recipe. The recipe I am sharing with you is not a Krispy Kreme recipe but after you make and taste these donuts you might say they taste like Krispy Kreme donuts.

You may notice the recipe calls for scalded milk. Scalded milk makes the donuts very light and fluffy and also helps the vanilla flavor stand out in the taste. It makes a big difference between a regular donut and a superior one.

The recipe has a regular sugar glaze with it but if you want to decorate your donuts you can add food coloring to the glaze and add your favorite sprinkle candy on top. You are only limited by your imagination when it comes to decorating donuts. Have fun with it!

Perfect Donuts Recipe - (Pies & Pastries) 4-5 dozen

Ingredients:

  • 1 pint milk (scalded and cooled)
  • 1 cake yeast or dry yeast package
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 egg yolks or 2 whole eggs
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/4 pound butter
  • 5 to 6 cups all-purpose flour

Instructions:

  1. Dissolve the yeast in cooled milk and add 2 cups flour.
  2. Let it set in a warm place for about 1/2 hour.
  3. Meanwhile beat the eggs, sugar, vanilla, and salt until light and fluffy.
  4. Then add to the sponge after it has set the half-hour.
  5. Melt the butter and also add to the sponge.
  6. Add the last 5 to 6 cups of flour as needed.
  7. Knead lightly, put it in a well-greased bowl, and set it in a warm place until doubled in bulk.
  8. Knead down lightly and let rise again; divide into 2 portions.
  9. Turn on a flowered board or cabinet top.
  10. Pat to 1/2 inch thickness and cut with a donut cutter.
  11. Lay the cutout donuts on a lightly floured cloth cover and let rise until light.
  12. Drop in hot oil at 360°; top side down. (This is important as it's the lightest side and the underside which will be the top side in the hot oil will rise a little more.)
  13. Drain the donuts on paper towels.
  14. Roll the donuts in powdered or granulated sugar or make a powdered sugar glaze and dip the donuts.

Glaze

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup boiling water

Instructions:

Mix the powdered sugar and water together well. Dip the donuts in the glaze. Mix more glaze if needed.
