Food For Thought:
Cucumber and tomatoes! |
This weekend was a great weekend for fresh-cut vegetable salads at my house. I love vegetables and I don't get enough of them in my opinion. There are so many memories around fresh cucumbers. My grandmother had a great garden and would grow cucumbers.
She would pick the cucumbers and grind them into sweet relish. The house was filled with the aroma of cucumber. It is a scent I attached to a nostalgic memory. Every time I smell cucumbers I am taken back to my childhood. I love sweet relish.
Do you like cucumbers and tomatoes? I made a quick salad by cutting them up and mixing together Italian dressing, sweet vinegar dressing, and ranch dressing.

Here's a scoop on the history of slushies:
Early frozen treats: Believe it or not, slushies have a long history that stretches back thousands of years. As early as 200 BC, people in ancient China were enjoying a version of the slush by mixing snow with fruit juices or honey. This was a special treat reserved for royalty because keeping ice cold in warm climates was difficult.
Innovation in Persia: Fast forward to around 400 BC, ancient Persians (in modern-day Iran) developed a clever method for storing ice year-round called the "yakhchal." This allowed them to enjoy chilled treats for much longer periods.
The accidental invention of the modern slush: We can thank Omar Knedlik, a Dairy Queen franchise owner in the 1950s, for the slush we know today. His soda fountain malfunctioned, and with no other options, he stuck bottles of soda in the freezer. To his surprise, customers loved the slushy result. This sparked his idea to create a machine specifically for making these icy drinks, and the ICEE machine was born (later renamed Slurpee by 7-Eleven).
Supercooled slushies: Did you know there was once a supercooled slush? In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Coca-Cola experimented with supercooling Sprite in the UK. Special vending machines kept the bottles in a supercooled state, so they would turn into slush when opened.

My Thoughts On Fruit Punch Slush:
I love lemonade, orange juice, bananas, and pineapple juice. This slush recipe is great for summertime and any time of the year if you ask me. When I was a kid I had a slush cup. The cup was insulated with a liquid and I would freeze it. After I put it in the freezer I would take it out and add my favorite drink. I let it set for a few minutes and would scrape the inside of the cup with a spoon. I would repeat this until the cup was filled with slush. It was a great kid product for the warm weather. I tried everything from soda, juice, kool-aid, and even milk.

*This slush can be put into an orange peel and served as a condiment. If you use this as a condiment, do not add the soda. Children love this as a cool treat straight from the freezer.
